UNICAL VC urges new students to shun cultism, examination malpractice

The Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has urged newly admitted students of the institution to shun cultism, examination malpractice and other forms of illegal practices on campus.

Obi gave the charge at the 2020/2021 freshmen orientation held at the institution’s International Conference Center on Monday in Calabar.

The vice chancellor assured the students that no one would harass them, adding that she would protect their rights and privileges while in the institution.

She noted that her administration was determined to ensure that students were given the right and desirable treat to enable them excel in their various disciplines.

According to her, every student admitted deserved the best, as the management of the university exists because of the students.

While congratulating the freshmen for being among those admitted, Obi said that out of the 40,000 students who applied to study in the university, only 10,000 were lucky to be admitted.

She emphasised that the essence of the orientation was to integrate the students fully in the institution so that they would know the dos and don’ts of the university.

“It is my delight to welcome you to the University of Calabar. Let me congratulate you for being among the 10,000 people admitted in our university,” she said.

While reiterating her administration’s commitment toward the welfare of the students, Prof. Obi promised to always protect and provide succour to the students from any form of inimical treatment against them.

She said that to make life on campus easier for them, she had evolved a strategy plan in her scheme of things to safeguard their well-being.

Obi charged the newly admitted students to prove themselves in learning, adding that there was no short cut in attaining academic excellence.

The vice chancellor said that the only way out for academic excellence was for the students to study hard, obey the laid down rules and pay their fees as at when due.

Speaking earlier, the Registrar of the University, Mr Gabriel Egbe, said that the policies and rules of the university were intended to benefit the students and the university as a corporate entity.

While welcoming the freshmen, the Registrar advised them to obey all the rules and regulations which were based on the mission and vision of the university.

Also speaking, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Tony Eyang, admonished the students to put in their best in the pursuit of their studies. (NAN)
