Two Vehicles Collide, Catch Fire At Onitsha Niger Bridge, Wares Burnt

Wares worth millions of naira were gutted by fire when two vehicles, 608 truck ladden with mattresses and J5 bus also laden with plywoods, had a head on collision at the Onitsha end of the Niger Bridge approach.

The accident which occurred by 8:00pm on Tuesday night, resulted in heavy gridlock in the morning being Wednesday forcing motorists to ply one lane both from and to Onitsha.

Reacting on the incident, the Divisional Traffic Officer (DSP) Onyebuchi Paul. at the Bridge Head Police Division Onitsha, said that efforts by Police men on duty at the time proved abortive as they could not lay hand on any fire extinguisher from the vehicles on the road.

“Fire fighters from Delta State came and quenched the fire but too late to safe the goods loaded by the two vehicles.

“The J5 was loaded with plywood at Ogbosisi bridge head market, heading to Delta while 608 truck was coming from Delta. No life was lost at the inferno.

“Both vehicles have been towed away by ATMA towing truck as the owners who reported the accident at the station were discharged as their case was an accident.

Also reacting, a Road Safety officer ( 3 stars) by name CJ Tata, said that Berger company tried to stop the fire but couldn’t.

“Some touts stormed the scene and we’re looking the wares but the fire did not allow them to operate fully.
