Two Policemen, 18 others arrested at wedding ceremony in Delta

Police operatives in Bomadi, Delta state have arrested two Police Sergeant serving with the Delta State Police Command, and 18 others in Bomadi town for violating the lockdown order by the state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.


The policemen in the company of the others were arrested at a hotel during a birthday party.


It was gathered that the operatives (names withheld) were attached to one of the divisions in Asaba the state capital and were reported to have left their duty posts to Bomadi for the party.


Giving details of the incident, a security source from the Bomadi Police Division, said the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of the division, had sent a team to the hotel to round up those who partook in the party following intelligence information.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “Upon getting the intelligence report, the DPO deployed a team of policemen to the hotel to stop the party and arrest those in attendance.


“However, upon getting to the police station, the police sergeants were able to identify themselves as policemen and were subsequently released”.

 When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya promised to get details on the matter, but she was yet to do so as at the time of filling this report”.


Meanwhile, as the lockdown is to end today Tuesday, some residents, of Ughelli Town in Ughelli North Local Government Area have appreciated the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the lockdown extension but appealed for a review of the dusk to dawn curfew.

According to Mr. Stephen Ayovoriona, a transporter who spoke to our correspondent aid the governor has done well by extending the lockdown to enable the state check the rapid spread of the corona virus.


Mr. Ayovoriona said the only problem is how to get food to feed his family since he could no longer work.


“The extension of the lockdown by the Delta State governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is very good. The only problem is the hardship inside. I don’t have any means to provide food for my family for now” he stated.


Mr. Ayovoriona lamented that the curfew had compounded the problem as he could not work in the evening to care for the family needs.

“Now that there is curfew, things have become more difficult. There is no money to feed because I can no longer work in the evening and now the hunger is even stronger than the coronavirus. 


“The curfew is so tough and it’s being enforced and monitored by both the police and the vigilantes. So, we cannot work in the evening”, he lamented.


He appealed to the state government to give them chance to work in the evening to enable them feed their families, saying that hunger may kill them as a result of the lockdown and curfew.
