Two persons have been accidentally killed and about seven others severely injured by a trigger happy policeman popularly called “accidental discharge” in Ideato North local government area of Imo State.
The incident which happened at the weekend during interment of the late mother of the traditional ruler of Umuakoli Urualla in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Eze Martin Aladi, weekend.
The incident happened when members of the Ideato Committee of Friends went to the king’s Chambers to pay him a condolence visit.
The identity of the policeman is yet to be identified but sources said he is currently attached to a prominent indigene of the community, Mr. Remy Chris Nwagbo.
Sources told The Authority Daily that members of the group were leaving the king’s palace when they saw Nwagbo, who is also a member of Ideato Committe of Friends, and decided to accompany him to pay his own visit to the Eze.
However, the trigger happy policeman in a bid to show solidarity with the group with gun salutes but it left casualties.
The source who pleaded anonymity said “As he made to lift the gun up, it opened fire, it destroyed the jaws of the man exchanging greetings with Chris as well as injured about seven other persons waiting to greet Remy Chris”, and left many scampering for safety.
The source said that the last person the bullet touched died instantly because the bullet shattered his brains to while the other person was confirmed dead in the hospital.
Meanwhile, efforts to get the reaction of the Imo State Police command spokesman, Orlando Ikeoku was delayed as he responded ‘Get back to you please’ to a text message sent to him by our correspondent.
However, as at press time, he was yet to react. Meanwhile, a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity confirmed the development adding that already the concerned policeman has been arrested and is scheduled to face orderly room trial.
