Tears in Okija, as 2 killed, 16 injured

Tears flowed freely early today in Okija Community , Ihiala local governmet area of Anambra state when a Blue Hiaice Commercial Bus crashed into a DAF Tanker killing two and injuring sixteen people.

A press statement by SP Haruna Mohammed, PPRO Anambra State Police Command, for the Commissioner of Police Anambra State said the accident is under investigation.

The release stated: ‘’ On the 15/10/2018 at about 730AM, there was a fatal motor accident at Okija junction by Onitsha /Owerri expressway in Okija LGA of Anambra State involving a Blue Hiaice Commercial Bus with registration number AH 818 ABU driven by one Cletus male, surname yet unknown and a DAF Tanker driven by one Abdurrahman Abdulaziz ‘m’ of Offa in Kwara State.

‘’The Accident occurred when the bus driver was coming down from the slopy road at the Okija junction towards the expressway suddenly lost control due to brake failure and crashed into the moving DAF truck loaded with cooking Gas. As a result of the accident, Sixteen Persons including the drivers sustained various degrees of injuries.

 ‘’Police Patrol team attached to Okija division in conjunction with FRSC Officials visited the Scene and rushed casualties to Obi Jackson and Saviour Hospitals for medical attention.

  ‘’However, Two victims were confirmed dead by medical Doctors, Seven were discharged while Nine others are admitted and presently responding to treatment.

‘’Meanwhile, the area was cordoned off by the Police to ensure safety and prevent Gas explosion from the Tanker. Obstructions was also cleared to enable free flow of traffic.

‘’Particulars of Deceased victims are (1) Late Mrs Elizabeth Nkanigbo ‘f’ of Umuofor Village Okija whose Corpse was deposited at our lady Hospital Mortuary Ihiala and (1)Late Mr Anthony Okoye ‘m’ of Uhuobo, Okija whose Corpse was deposited at Gen Hospital Okija respectively. Case is under investigation’’.

Once chance robbery syndicate nabbed

‘’In order to further stem the tide of crime and in it’s determination to provide safety and Security in the State, the Command has once again smashed a one chance robbery syndicate and suspected rapists as follows,

   ‘’On the 14/10/2018 at about 10:PM, Police Patrol team attached to Oyi Division arrested one Chinedu Uyanna male aged’ 28 years of Nkpor Uno in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.

   ‘’Suspect along with his fleeing accomplices belonged to a syndicate who specialised in robbing oblivious passengers using a Mitsubishi L300 bus with REG number XC 489 GWA .The gang members who posed in their vehicle as Commuter bus conveyed one Nwaga Oluchi f’ aged 28 years of No 3b,Obi Benjamin Street Onitsha and Mmesoma  Nwafor ‘m’ who boarded the bus at Nkpor to Ogbommanu in Onitsha suddenly diverted to Umunya/Tansian University road and allegedly Raped the female passenger,Stole her bag , ATM Card and other items before the Police swooped on them leading to the arrest of the bus driver while other gang members escaped.

  ‘’Meanwhile, the victim was taken to Chira Hospital Awkuzu for medical examination and the Mitsubishi Bus used in perpetrating the dastardly act was recovered. Efforts are ongoing to apprehended other fleeing members in order to bring them to Justice.

   ‘’It would also be recalled that the Command had on the 9/10/2018 arrested similar syndicate who hypnotized their victim, one Ifunanya Perpetual ‘f’ and pushed her down from a moving Toyota Camry Car after robbing her of her money and other valuables. All cases are under investigation.

 ‘’ Finally, the Command reassures the Public of it’s readiness at ensuring that all citizens are protected especially during this Ember Months period and implores them to be weary of the vehicles they board particularly unregistered ones in order not to fall victims of one chance robbery’’.
