As part of efforts to promote inclusive and accessible electoral participation for persons with disabilities, TAF Africa, in partnership with the European Union through its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, has trained over 25 sign language interpreters in Anambra State ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

The training, held in Awka, is the first of its kind in the state and forms part of TAF Africa’s nationwide campaign to ensure that voters with hearing impairments are not left out of the democratic process also designed to equip interpreters with the necessary skills to assist deaf and hard-of-hearing voters during campaigns, voting, and result announcements.

Sign language, which relies on hand gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meaning, remains a crucial tool for communication among persons with hearing disabilities. Its integration into electoral activities helps to enhance accessibility, foster inclusion, and prevent discrimination in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Speaking at the event, TAF Africa’s representative, Mr. George Anwayi, said disability inclusion is an essential component of credible elections, emphasizing that no citizen should face barriers in exercising their civic rights noting that having trained interpreters across polling units will help promote transparency, inclusivity, and voter confidence during the forthcoming election.

Also speaking, TAF Africa Communication Officer, Ms. Lynn Agwuncha said TAF Africa, formerly known as The Albino Foundation, has carried out similar trainings in other states as part of its ongoing advocacy for disability inclusion, equal rights, and accessible governance in Nigeria while reiterating the European Union’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen democratic participation and equal access for all.

In her remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Elizabeth Agwu, represented by the Head of Electoral Operations, Mr. Ejikeme Ejimofor described the initiative as a welcome development that aligns with INEC’s goal of ensuring that no voter is left behind noting that with 5,729 polling units in Anambra State, the Commission’s field officers would benefit greatly from the presence of trained interpreters on election day.

Participants at the event described the training as timely and impactful, expressing appreciation to TAF Africa and the European Union for giving them the opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive electoral environment.
