The South Sudanese government has lifted a temporary suspension on Facebook and TikTok, imposed last week following the circulation of videos allegedly showing the killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan. In a letter to telecom and internet providers, the National Communications Authority announced that the graphic content, which had sparked violent protests and retaliatory attacks across South Sudan, has been removed from the platforms. Napoleon Adok Gai, the Authority’s director, emphasized the need for addressing online incitement while safeguarding citizens’ rights. Rights groups have accused the Sudanese army and allies of ethnically targeted attacks in Sudan’s El Gezira state earlier this month, while the army condemned the actions as isolated violations.
