Scores injured, vehicles burnt as petrol tanker explodes in flame in Onitsha

A petrol tanker laden with premium motor spirit, PMS on Sunday, exploded at Chris-Tee filling station located between Savoy bus stop and Boromeo roundabout in the heart of the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, while discharging the PMS

The incident which occurred at about 7.30 p.m., left several persons with various degrees of injuries, while about 15 vehicles parked adjacent mechanic workshop were burnt beyond recognition.

It took men of the state fire service an extra efforts to prevent the inferno from spreading to the other nearby petrol stations.

DRC Margaret B. Onabe, AG sector public education officer, Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC Anambra state sector command confirmed the incident to newsmen in Onitsha.

She said men of the Fire Service and FRSC Rescue Team were on ground to curtail the inferno.

Meantime, the sector commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye A Irelewuyi, implored the public to be calm and patient, while urging them to observe traffic rules, especially during this yuletide.

An eye witness said the fire started at Chris- Tee gas plant and spread over to the the main Chris+Tee petrol station before being prevented from spreading to two other nearby petrol stations which included Rain Oil and Ejison Oil and Gas.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochi Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, also confirmed the incident.
