Sales rep docked for allegedly stealing employer’s goods worth N20m

A 25-year-old sales representative, Uchechi Okeke, on Friday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing her employer’s goods worth N20m.

Okeke, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 3, 2023, at Broad St., Lagos Island.

Ihiehie said the defendant allegedly stole the goods belonging to the complainant, Mr Patrick Ogbonna.

“The defendant some stole clothes meant for sales from where they were kept at the store, when her employer was away.

“She was, however, apprehended by security guards and handed over to the police,” Ihiehie said.

Ihiehie said the offences contravened Sections 411 and 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Layinka, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Layinka adjourned the case until April 4 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287(7) stipulates seven years jail term for stealing from one’s employer, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.
