Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has criticized what she described as the deterioration of Nigeria’s political space, arguing that politics has become a platform for individuals who lack the competence, vision, and integrity required for leadership.

In a strongly worded social media post, Edochie lamented that political offices are now being sought by people she believes have little to offer the public. She questioned when politics became “a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions,” suggesting that many aspirants are driven more by personal recognition than genuine service to the people.

The actress contrasted the current political environment with what she described as an earlier era when aspiring politicians were thoroughly evaluated before being allowed to contest even for local government positions. According to her, leadership positions were once reserved for individuals who demonstrated capacity, character, and preparedness for public service.

Edochie expressed concern that those standards have weakened over time, allowing almost anyone to seek public office regardless of competence or vision. She added that she has been observing developments in the political space with disappointment while hoping for better outcomes for Nigerians, particularly those facing ins£curity and other national challenges.
