PROF BOND AND THE UNBINDING OF SYCOPHANCY
By Samuel Idowu
Every leader comes into history carrying not just a title, but a story. Sometimes, a leader’s story quietly reveals the path he is meant to walk. For Prof. Bond Ugochukwu , that story begins long before administration, long before academia—long before the gates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University awaited him.
During his acceptance speech, he shared the significance of his names: his father, Godwin —“God will always win”, and his mother, Grace —“the grace of God guides me.” His own Igbo name, Ugochukwu —Eagle, calls him to rise above, to see clearly, and to lead with vision and courage. He said his birth was the bond that brought his father-Godwin and his mother- Grace together—a child meant to connect, restore, and unify. That bond is more than family history; it is a leadership prophecy.
Now, as he steps into the Vice-Chancellorship , that same bond is needed to confront a challenge that has held the university back: sycophancy .
Sycophancy is a subtle chain. It applauds loudly but hides the truth. It comforts but blinds. It pretends to love leadership but secretly weakens it. No university can rise when leaders’ ears are captured by praise-singers. Progress dies where flattery becomes currency and competence takes the back seat.
UNIZIK needs leadership that listens widely, acts boldly, and stands firmly above noise. If Prof. Bond rises above applause, embraces truth even when it is uncomfortable, and leads with integrity, the chains of sycophancy will break, peace will return, and progress will flourish. The Eagle has been called to soar—let him lift UNIZIK to heights worthy of its name and destiny.
Just a Reflection with Idowu.
