Police clears couple caught having sex in car

Nigerian Police on Monday said that having sex in a car at a public place is not a crime and would not amount to arrest if done by persons within adult age in the country.

Police spokesman Abayomi Shogunle made the disclosure while responding to a question by a Nigerian Twitter user.

Shogunle said it is not an offense provided the location is not a place of worship and the persons involved are of opposite sex that is 18 years or older.

“Sex in a car in a public place is not a crime in Nigeria provided; location is not a place of worship; parties are 18 yrs+; the act is consensual (agreed to by parties) [and] parties are of opposite sex,” Shogunle said.

He insisted that persons who conform to the rules he mentioned cannot be arrested by the police.

He said if such persons are threatened with an arrest, they should lodge a complaint with the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit of the Nigerian police.

The police enquiry was apparently prompted by reports that resident of yet-to-be disclosed area shamed a couple who they caught having coitus in a car in their neighborhood.

Apparently, the couple who parked their vehicle in an isolated area along the street and began their copulation.

Someone who reportedly spotted the act immediately alerted other residents of the area, and they went on to disgrace them.

Apparently, they are angry that they brought their private affair to the neighborhood.

Though Facebook user John did not give the exact location of the incident, however it was gathered that the couple were sent away after they were embarrassed.

While some social media users supported the move by residents of the area, others maintained that the couple did nothing wrong and shouldn’t have been shamed since they are both adults
