Oye Agu Market Traders Lead Early Cleanup as Anambra Steps Up Environmental Sanitation

Traders at Oye Agu Market, Abagana, have intensified the clearing of drainage channels and evacuation of refuse ahead of Anambra State’s statewide environmental sanitation exercise, reflecting growing public support for the government’s campaign to build cleaner and flood resilient communities.

During an inspection of the market, the Commissioner for Environment, Barr. Clem Aguiyi, commended the traders for taking proactive steps to desilt blocked drains and clean their surroundings before the commencement of the statewide sanitation exercise and the temporary restriction of movement.

He described the early cleanup as a strong demonstration of community participation in the state’s environmental emergency, noting that such efforts would help reduce flooding, improve public health, and create a safer environment for residents.

Barr. Aguiyi disclosed that he had engaged the Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area to ensure the immediate evacuation of refuse and silt removed from the drainage channels, preventing the waste from accumulating within the market after the exercise.

He noted that similar sanitation activities were taking place in markets and communities across Anambra State, with residents, market leaders, and local government authorities embracing the government’s environmental initiative.

According to the commissioner, the sanitation exercise is intended to establish a lasting culture of environmental cleanliness rather than serve as a one off exercise. He urged Ndi Anambra to maintain clean surroundings at all times, stressing that sustained public cooperation would reduce the need for continued emergency measures and strict enforcement.

Barr. Aguiyi expressed optimism that the success of the exercise would encourage communities to make environmental sanitation a regular responsibility.

During a visit to Dunukofia Local Government Area, the Mayor, Barr. Chijioke Ozumba, commended Governor **** for appointing Barr. Clem Aguiyi as Commissioner for Environment. He noted that the commissioner’s field based approach had strengthened environmental awareness across the state and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting government policies aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier Anambra.
