The Journalism Centre on Global Trafficking, in collaboration with the Center on Human Trafficking Research and Outreach at the University of Georgia, has announced the launch of a six months training programme for Sierra Leonean journalists, interested in reporting on human trafficking. The J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards

Established in 1998, the J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards recognise excellence in non-fiction that exemplifies literary grace and commitment to serious research and social concern. The J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Awards give US$25,000 annually to aid in the completion of a significant work of non-fiction on a topic of American political or social concern.  No entry fee is required. The J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize awards US$10,000 annually to a book­-length work of narrative nonfiction on a topic of American political or social concern. The Mark Lynton History Prize awards US$10,000 to a book­-length work of history on any topic that best combines intellectual distinction with felicity of expression. Kim Wall Memorial Fund 2023

The International Women’s Media Foundation’s Kim Wall Memorial Fund will provide $5,000 grants to journalists whose work embodies the spirit of Kim’s reporting. The grant will fund women or non-binary reporters covering subculture, broadly defined, and what Kim liked to call “the undercurrents of rebellion.” Kim wanted more women to be out in the world, brushing up against life, and the Kim Wall Memorial Fund honors this legacy. Introduction to journalistic storytelling fellowship

Inside Burundi launches its second cohort calling graduates residing in Burundi to apply for its Introduction to journalist storytelling fellowship. The fellowship looks forward to training young aspiring journalist on reporting skills. It is open to youth and interested applicants residing in the city of Bujumbura. #PreventEpidemicsNaija Journalism Awards 2022

The #PreventEpidemicsNaija Journalism Awards honours journalists who have reported on all dimensions of epidemic preparedness in Nigeria in digital/print, audio and video formats. Entries must have been published or aired between January 1, 2022 and November 30, 2022. Possible topics include issues around epidemic preparedness, budgeting and funding for epidemic preparedness, awareness raising and more. The Knight Science Journalism Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers academic-year fellowships to 10 science journalists, to give them an opportunity to explore science, technology, and the craft of journalism; to concentrate on a specialty in science, and to learn at some of the top research universities in the world. COMESA Media Awards 2023

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) announces the call for entries for the 2023 COMESA Media Awards. The award scheme is conducted every year to recognise and reward journalists who have contributed to regional integration by publishing and producing broadcast stories on the subject. The objective of the awards is to promote reporting of COMESA regional integration projects hence raising public awareness, understanding and participation and ownership. Relevant topics for entry include development projects involving more than one COMESA member state or a national project which have a regional dimension. Such projects cover trade, infrastructure (energy, transport, ICT), investments, gender, etc. If the article/programme is not about a COMESA programme, at least it should demonstrate the author/producer’s understanding of COMESA’s programmes. 2023 ICFJ Knight Awards 

International Center for Journalists is seeking nominees whose pioneering coverage or media innovations have made an impact on the lives of people in their countries or regions. 17th Taco Kuiper Award for Investigative Journalism

The annual award recognises outstanding examples of investigative reporting within South Africa. Africa Environment Reporting Programme

African Women in the Media (AWiM) is a network for African women working in media industries anywhere globally. AWiM is calling for pitches that will call attention to the gendered aspect of environmental issues in Africa. AWiM is particularly interested in in-depth stories that explore environmental solutions with a focus on any of the 12 elements of the African Green Stimulus Programme. Journalists can also highlight the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation, waste management and other issues related to the broader ecological challenges in Africa which affect women. Thomson Foundation: News Writing: The art of storytelling

This course is designed to teach you how to write news stories in an effective and engaging way using techniques employed by Ewen MacAskill and other journalists around the world. Ewen will teach you when and how to go beyond the inverted pyramid model of storytelling to make your stories stand out and make you a better storyteller.
