Opinion: Gulak’s Assassination, Here Are Some Vital Questions That Beg For Answers

0

For those bent on calling a dog a bad name to hang it, the gruesome murder of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri had ethnic undertones. But the facts on the ground suggest otherwise. If anything, the late Gulak was a champion in Imo State, and Igboland in general.

It was Ahmed Gulak who prised the patrimony of Imo State out from the jaws of the Rochas dynasty and Imo people were very grateful for that. There was nothing the man did afterwards that could have damaged his standing in the eyes of the people.

In addition, it is against Igbo culture to harm a visitor; in fact, a typical Igboman is prepared to lose his life than let harm befall his guest. Unfortunately, this is the first time that a politically exposed ‘big man’ from outside Igboland is suffering like this. However, the Police in their usual knee-jerk manner chose to execute judgment before investigating the crime. They also seemed to blame the dead man by saying he left his hotel without telling them, which suggests they were keeping an eye on his movement.

The family of Gulak and the public would have loved to know who killed him and the motive behind the dastardly act, but the Police action has precluded all that. The Police have done a grave injustice to everyone. On his own, Governor Hope Uzodinma has come out to say it was a political assassination, suggesting that he knows something that the rest of us do not know. Again, that sort of commentary does anything but facilitate the process of solving the crime.

Nevertheless, a few questions need to be answered:
1) Who organized the uber ride for Ahmed Gulak?

2) Who was the driver and has his phone records been scrutinized?

3) Who decided for the driver to follow the backchannel to the airport?

4) Was Gulak disguising himself by dressing like an average Igboman (in jeans and t-shirt)?

5) Who else was in the car with him and why did the Police not treat them as persons of interest?

6) Why has the Police not interviewed them publicly as is their practice?

7) Was Gulak of any interest to the IPOB?

8) Did he ever say or do anything inimical to the cause of IPOB?

8) If not, why should the Police link the murder to the group?

9) On October 2, 2018, the same Gulak alleged that he ran away from his Rockview Hotel room in Owerri by 4 a.m. because some agents of a powerful figure in Imo State were after him. Did the Police bother to revisit that allegation?

10) Why are the Police desperate to link Gulak’s murder to the Biafran agitation?

What are your thoughts?
