Onitsha Main Market Gears Up For Modern Transformation

Onitsha Main Market is set for a major facelift as the Anambra State Government officially commenced its urban modernisation project, a development that has been welcomed by traders and the market executive as a significant step towards restoring the glory of the market.

The Commissioner for Housing, Architect Henry Arinze, led a delegation of government officials to the market to formally hand over the project site to the lead contractor and engage stakeholders on the scope and implementation of the project.

Addressing traders and market executives, Architect Arinze said the project, in line with the vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, is designed to transform the market with modern facilities, including a steady electricity supply, designated waste disposal points, a water fountain, a food court, car parks, bus stops, and other conveniences that will improve the overall trading experience.

He assured traders that the construction work would be carried out with minimal disruption, explaining that most of the activities would take place after the close of business each day, and added that adequate lighting and security arrangements have been put in place by the state government in collaboration with the market executive to safeguard shops and goods throughout the project period.

Receiving the delegation, the Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Honourable Chijioke Okpalugo, described the commencement of the project as a new beginning for the market, expressing optimism that the modernisation initiative would further strengthen its position as a leading commercial hub in West Africa.

He pledged the full cooperation of the market executive and traders, revealing that the Ocha Brigade, market task force, security personnel, and other relevant teams have been directed to ensure the free movement of workers and construction materials within the market.

Speaking with our media team, one of the contractors and Chief Executive Officer of Best Aluminium, Chief Pius Nweke, expressed confidence in their capacity to deliver the project within the four-month timeline given by the state government.

The event also featured an interactive question-and-answer session, during which traders and workers sought clarifications on the project.
