The Director, Anambra State Fire Service, Mr. Martin Agbili has disclosed that a Fire Service Unit will be established at Upper-Iweka Onitsha for quick response to emergencies . this during his meeting with the Committee of enquiry set up by the Anambra State House of Assembly to investigate the causes of the recent fire outbreak in Onitsha with a view to averting future occurrence held in Awka.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that according to Mr Agbili, Governor Willie Obiano gave them an assurance that a fire fighting unit will be put in place to further enhance the efforts of the Anambra State Fire Service in fighting fire incidences.
He further told the committee that the State Government has procured more fire fighting gadgets for the agency and improved the welfare package of the staff for efficient service delivery.
The committee had earlier met with the leadership of the Ochanja Market where they brainstormed on ways to avoid further fire occurrence in the market .
Speaking to journalists, the Chairman of the committee, Honorable Chidi Udemmadu, said Anambra State House of Assembly was saddened by the recent Onitsha fire disaster.
He explained that the meeting was designed to chart a way forward for the Ochanja market and the Anambra State Fire Service and disclosed that the committee has mandated the leadership of Ochanja market to install fire fighting unit in the market to assist the state fire service in discharging their duties.
Honorable Udemmadu told the ABS that the committee will make recommendations after its findings.
In a vote of thanks, the Chairman, Ochanja Central Market, Chief Nelson Ojukwu, commended the Anambra State House of Assembly for being sensitive to their plight.
