NYSC provides free healthcare services to vulnerable persons in Abia

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Thursday, began free healthcare services for rural dwellers in Okaiuga Nkwoegwu community in Umuahia North Local Govermnent Area in Abia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day programme is tagged: “2021 NYSC Healthcare Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).”Mrs Nwatarali, Director South-East Area Office, Enugu State said the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim deemed it wise to have the second phase of the nationwide programme because of its importance.

The director, who was represented by her deputy, Mrs Favour Udonte, said the scheme decided to penetrate the rural areas to help the less privileged.NYSC Coordinator in Abia, Mr Denis Jingi, said the programme was packaged to sensitise the people on their health needs. He said the NYSC deployed corps medical volunteers comprising doctors, opticians, nurses and others, to treat the patients that were not able to make themselves available to either government or private facilities.According to him, the people are treated free of charge and any person with a serious challenge will be referred to higher hospitals for proper attention.Major sponsor of the programme, Mr Kelechi Onuzuruike, member, representing Umuahia North State Constituency, said he attracted the programme to his locality so that his people could have medical attention.Also, Mr Ebuka Igwe, said four corporate bodies which he represented, donated drugs worth over N500,000 and other medical facilities, as part of their corporate social responsibilities (CSR).

The donors, according to Igwe, a legal practitioner, included: Millers Club International, Hotel Helson Beneph Associates and Pumeco Industry.Eze Paul Uzuegbu, the Traditional Ruler of Okaiuga Nkwoegwu Autonomous Community, who spoke on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude to NYSC for the initiative.

NAN reports that many people, especially the elderly, had their health checked while drugs were given to them accordingly. (NAN)
