Nigeria Senate Begins Constitutional Amendment, And For A Referendum.

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday commenced the process of amending the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), requesting for memoranda and proposals from Nigerians and interest groups.

This was contained in a statement on Thursday by the Deputy President of the Senate and chairman Ad-hoc committee on the review, Ovie Omo-Agege.

According to the statement, the committee welcomes proposals that would promote good governance and welfare of all persons in the country, especially on the principles of freedom, Equality and Justice.

“The Committee requests the general public, Executive and Judicial bodies, Civil Society Organizations, Professional bodies and other interest groups to submit memoranda or proposals for further alteration(s) of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

“Proposals can be on the under listed matters and on any other matter that will promote good governance and welfare of all persons in our country on the principles of freedom, Equality and Justice,” the statement said.

Matters listed by the committee include Gender Equality for women and girls, the Federal Structure and Power Devolution, Local Government/Local Government Autonomy and Public Revenue, Fiscal Federation and Revenue Allocation.

Others include Nigerian Police and Nigerian Security Architecture, Comprehensive Judicial Reforms and Electoral Reforms to strengthen INEC to deliver transparently credible free and fair elections 8. Socio-economic and cultural rights as contained in Chapter 2 of the constitution.

The statement further stated other clauses such as Strengthening the Independence of oversight institutions and agencies created by the constitution or pursuant to an act of the National Assembly, Residency and Indigene Provisions, Immunity, The National Assembly and State Creation.

The committee, therefore, urged all interested persons or groups to submit all proposals and memoranda to the Secretariat of the committee in Room 0.28, Senate New wing, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

It also noted that all proposals should be submitted not later than 14 days from the date of this publication.
