NAWOJ Anambra Chapter Throws Weight Behind Special Seats Bill
By Julie Sylvia Onitsha
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Anambra State Chapter has expressed its unwavering support for the Special Seats Bill, currently before the National Assembly, aimed at increasing women’s representation in governance.
In a statement, NAWOJ emphasized that the bill is not about privileges, but about fairness and inclusivity, seeking to correct historical imbalance and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The association argues that the continued underrepresentation of women in legislative sectors poses a democratic imbalance and demands urgent passage of the bill.
NAWOJ Anambra Chapter calls on female lawmakers, senators, and representatives to champion the cause, and urges political parties, civil society organizations, and community leaders to lend support.
“We believe that democracy can truly thrive only when all strata of the population are duly represented in both political leadership and decision-making processes,” the statement read.
The association highlights the competence, resilience, and capacity of Nigerian women across various sectors, and laments that this has not been reflected in the political arena.
NAWOJ Anambra Chapter plans to engage stakeholders, organize media events, and collaborate with women groups to amplify advocacy efforts.
The statement concludes: “A vote for the Special Seats Bill is a vote for equity, inclusive governance, and fair representation in Nigeria.”
The association’s chairperson, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, signed the statement, urging all stakeholders to treat the effort with urgency and seriousness
