The National Assembly has raised concerns over the insufficient funding of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), despite the agency’s heavy caseload. During the 2024 National Legislative Forum on Human Rights in Abuja, lawmakers, including Senator Adeniyi Adegbomire and Mudashiru Lukeman, highlighted the need for a larger budget for the Commission. The NHRC’s current allocation, under N5 billion, is deemed inadequate to handle the over two million complaints it receives annually. Lawmakers promised to push for higher funding in the 2025 budget to address this issue. The NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, emphasized the Commission’s efforts to promote human rights nationwide.
