Nasarawa Govt begins demolition of illegal structures

Some illegally erected structures on water ways and others blocking access roads in Lafia the Nasarawa state capital are at risk of being demolished.

This is so as the Nasarawa state Urban Development Board on Tuesday began the demolition of illegally erected containers used as shops and buildings earlier marked for demolition that have blocked some streets in the city.

Speaking to our correspondent during the demolition exercise along Kurikyo road,Mallam Abubakar Mohammed ,head of the demolition exercise team of NUDB,said the exercise was long over due after serving the owners of the structures with noticed and a court order.

Mohammed Abubakar further said the continuous act of erecting illegal structures is deliberate,added that allowing it apart from blocking access to some areas,it defaced the community.

” So we are going round the state on the exercise,to particular areas that have been marked to have go against the law,even when served with noticed but refused to comply with the NUDB directive to demolished such structures” He added.

A young man who spoke on condition of anonymity,said the demolition exercise was the best thing for people who encroach into road side to build.

He however blamed the government for allowing individuals that build unchecked by the authorities concern,he urged stakeholders and community leaders to always draw the attention of the NUDB on any illegal structure in order to maintain a seren environment.

” I am particularly happy that this is happening in our area,because it will create enough ventilation,easy access for any emergency case like fire out break and can also help security to gain access on patrol” He said.
