NAPTAN Inaugurates New Executives in Anambra

The National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) Anambra state chapter, Monday, elected new officers that will pilot the affairs of the body in Awka South Local government area.

Odogwublog.com reports that the peaceful election was held in Awka on Monday, barely one month after appointing interim executives having dissolved earlier Excos whose tenures had elapsed.

However, the former PRO of the association, Mr Emmanuel Nwankwo emerged the new chairman in the keenly contested election while Azubuike Nweze won the position of the vice president.

 In other results Enwelu Grace, Okoye Regina and Okoye Peter won positions of Financial Secretary, Assistant financial secretary and welfare officer respectively while Nwobi Basil and Atogu emerged treasurer and secretary.

Speaking to newsmen shortly  after the election, the association’s state chairman and deputy national president, Sir Larry Anichebe Nnadike said that the election of the executives was in line with the constitution of the association stating that both the teachers and Parents have their quota and roles they play in the association.

Sir Nnadike who said he has huge expectations on the incoming excos charged them to make visitation to schools their primary responsibility so as to learn what is happening around the schools and even detect some challenges experienced by teachers as well as school children.

While he decried shortage of teachers in most schools, he maintained that the association has played a vital role in ensuring smooth running of school system through recruitment of PTA teachers who the association bankrolls. He urged the incoming excos to maintain the standard by ensuring that certified teachers are recruited so that they could be drafted in as permanent teachers when the need arises.

“Government have been trying, but we want them to try more. Let them employ teachers. We spend a lot of money to these PTA teachers on a monthly basis. We have more than 1,000 primary schools and over 300 secondary schools in the state and there is no primary school or secondary school that don’t have PTA teacher. Some have up to eight and we are paying them.”

Sir Nnadike charged the incoming excos to ensure that discipline is returned to school. He decried the habit of children going out during school hour and urged teachers in schools to sit up to their responsibilities.

He further urged the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, to discontinue the habit of allowing teachers use their personal money to run some vital school activities such as printing of examination papers.


In an interview with the new Awka South Chairman Mr Emmanuel Nwankwo, he said that he was highly elated to have won the election,  he noted that the development shows the huge trust that the members of the association have in him.

Nwankwo posited that the new executives will perform  better  than expected while he also assured that he will work closely with the government and schools to secure certified and quality teachers for the school children.
