Professor Charles Okechuwku Esimone has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.  Esimone, a Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology emerged as the man to take over the mantle of the vice chancellorship from Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku next month.

The out-going Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ebelendu Ahaneku, who is from Mbaise in Imo state, took over as the vice chancellor from Prof. Boniface Egboka in June, 2014.

The university’s Director of Information & Public Relations/Chief Protocol Officer, Dr. Emmanuel C. Ojukwu, who broke the news, disclosed that Esimone was handed his appointment letter as the 6 substantive Vice Chancellor of the university on Tuesday by the governing council of the institution.

According to Ojukwu, the Pro-Chancelor and the Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Azeez Oladotun, disclosed that Esimone emerged as the new VC through a rigorous and transparent selection process.

Esimone emerged the new VC and it comes barely two months after the Deeper Life campus pastor and his wife welcomed four babies, two boys and two girls. The couple had welcomed their first son in 2015, after 12 years of barrenness.

No fewer than 10 professors indicated interest in the vice chancellorship seat of the prestigious university. According to a statement advertising the VC post published by the Secretary to the Council and Acting Registrar in early January, the candidate must, inter alia, “be highly distinguished and self-motivated academic of the rank of Professor of not less ten (10) years experience on that rank in a reputable university”.

In addition, the statement stated that the candidate “must not be more than 65 years of age at the time of assumption of office, should be able to serve the full term of five years before attaining the retirement age of 70 years and must be physically and mentally fit.”

A pioneer dean of the faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of UNIZIK, he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) until his latest appointment.
