May Day: How Workers day was celebrated in Anambra State

During workers day celebration, workers in Anambra state have been enjoined not to let the present economic realities discourage them from being patriotic and observing personal hygiene at all times.


Some Labour leaders in the state made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria on this years workers Day celebration .
Workers day celebration was initiated in remembrance of a group of aggrieved factory workers who were brutally killed by security operatives in Chicago , USA on May one 1886 while agitating for their rights.

However the Covid 19 pandemic caused workers across the globe to celebrate the event from their various homes.
The Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress in Anambra state, Comrade Jerry Nnubia while condoning with the families of workers who have paid the supreme sacrifice in the fight against Covid-19 said the union demands for sufficient Personal Protective Equipment including suitable rest rooms and running water at various offices as workers resume duty in the state.
Comrade Nnubia called on the government to ensure the implementation of the New Minimum wage and its consequential adjustments as soon as the covid 19 pandemic is over.

On his part , the state Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Ifeanyi okechukwu enjoined the workers to be steadfast in their dealings by being dedicated to duty despite the economic condition in the country.


He called on the government to block all loopholes in revenue windows to enable it generate enough internally generated revenue which according to him would assist in reviving the economy this period.
Contributing, the President Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees , Comrade Chikwelu Odigwe called for improved salary structure for civil servants across the nation and commended the state government for prompt payment of salaries.


Comrade Chikwelu also harped on the need for attention to be paid on housing accommodation for workers as well as a subsidized transportation .
The labour leaders commended workers in the health, transportation, utility employees and journalists who have continued to show up at their duty posts despite the threats , scarcity of working tools among other challenges.

Correspondent Uche Ndeke reports that the theme for this year’s celebration May Day is, “Covid-19 Pandemic and its socio economic impact on the Nigeria Working Class”.
