Literacy by Radio: Agency graduates 1,200 adult learners in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education has graduated 1,200 adult learners under its Literacy by Radio programme.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Abbas Abubakar, said this during the issuance of certificates to 50 graduates at its Study Centre in Dangoli village, Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state.

He said that 1,200 graduates comprising 750 males and 450 females completed literacy, numeracy, life skills and religious knowledge studies between October 2021 and March 2022.

The executive secretary said the Federal Government sponsored 300 participants drawn from six LGAs while the state government sponsored 900 others from 18 LGAs.

According to him, the graduates, who are mostly rural dwellers become literate through the programme, as they can now read, write as well as acquired Islamic knowledge and basic skills.

“Having satisfied the requirement of an approved course of study at Adult Basic Level Literacy by Radio programme  1,200 learners of the year 2021, the agency will flag off the issuance of the year 2021 Basic Literacy certificate to the graduands,” he said.

He said the government had also sponsored over 2,500 learners for the year 2022 programme across the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the graduates participated in a symbolic quiz before issued with the certificates.

The test centred on phonetic sound, alphabet, sentence construction, spelling and writing, among others.

One of the graduates, Hamza Muazu, recalled that he could not read and write before he enrolled into the programme.

“Apart from being able to read and write, we can now also read, understand and reply to a Short Message Service (SMS) using our mobile phones,” he said.

Also, the District Head of Kiywa, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu, urged the beneficiaries to step down the training to enable other members of the community to become literate.

The traditional ruler also enjoined his subjects to enrol their wards in school. (NAN)
