Lawyer Urges Soludo to Prioritise Rehabilitation of Magistrates’, Customary Courts
A legal practitioner and stakeholder in the administration of justice in Anambra State, Mr. C. C. Nwankwo, Esq. (Dikeora), has issued an open letter to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, calling for the urgent rehabilitation of Magistrates’ and Customary Courts across the state.
In the letter, Nwankwo commended the Soludo administration for its achievements in infrastructure, security, education, and urban renewal, but expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of many lower courts, particularly those within the Awka Capital Territory.
He described the courts as the bedrock of the justice system, noting that many now suffer from leaking roofs, damaged ceilings, inadequate lighting and ventilation, poor road access, and a lack of basic amenities such as electricity and restrooms. He warned that decades of judicial records are at risk due to exposure to rain and moisture.
According to the lawyer, the deplorable state of the facilities undermines the dignity of the judiciary, endangers the health and safety of judicial officers and court users, and erodes public confidence in the administration of justice.
Nwankwo urged the Governor to treat the rehabilitation of the Magistrates’ and Customary Courts as a matter of urgent public importance, stressing that strengthening judicial institutions would leave a lasting legacy and reinforce the rule of law in Anambra State.
