The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), on Wednesday, urged Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra to rehabilitate and compensate traders of Plywood Market in Bridge-Head, Onitsha, over the recent devastating fire incident.

It would be recalled that Plywood Market in Bridge-Head, Onitsha was burnt down after an inferno that happened late at night about a week ago.

The Chairman of CLO Anambra, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that the traders are hapless and some are already depressed due the unfortunate incident.

Ezekwueme said that it was so touching that such a monumental destruction of goods and valuables worth millions of naira were destroyed at this period of economic hardship in the country.

According to him, “we appeal to the affected traders to have faith, truth and hope in God who never abandons his people.”

He said: “We commend the Nigeria Police for their prompt mobilisation of officers and men to the scene which led to the restoration of law and order and protection of lives and properties.

“We equally decried with great disdain the inability of Anambra State Fire Service to respond to distress calls during the inferno.

“There is a yearly budgetary allocation to the Anambra State Fire Service yet they always give flimsy excuses in every occasion where their services are needed.

“CLO passionately appeals to His Excellency, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, to overhaul the State Fire Service and make it more functional, alive and alert to its statutory responsibilities.”

The CLO boss noted that there was the need for the state government to constitute a committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the despicable fire disaster to forestall future occurrences.

“We appeal to market leaders, traders and citizens to adhere strictly to all safety measures to curtail incessant fire outbreak in the state and the country at large,” he added.
