‎As Nigeria heads towards the 2027 elections, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Disu has warned youths against becoming foot soldiers for political violence, saying they are the ones who bear the consequences long after politicians reconcile.

‎Disu gave the warning in Abuja at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue to mark International Youth Day 2026.

‎The IGP said the police would protect peaceful political participation, but would deal with the recruitment of youths for violence, voter intimidation, weapon use and destruction of property.

‎He also warned that political thuggery is moving online, with misinformation, hate speech, cyberbullying and deepfakes capable of triggering real-world violence.

‎Disu urged youths to verify before sharing, think before clicking and use their influence to build rather than destroy.

‎“Your future is Nigeria’s future,” Disu said, charging young Nigerians to reject violence and choose responsible participation in democracy.
