Police Review Personnel’s Conduct Over Onitsha Head Bridge Shooting
The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive review of the operational circumstances surrounding the recent incident at the Onitsha Head Bridge, where gunshot injuries were sustained after some persons allegedly resisted arrest.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, is personally evaluating the strategy, conduct and deployment of the police personnel involved to determine whether established operational procedures, rules of engagement and professional standards were followed.
The Commissioner reiterated that the Command will not compromise professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights, stressing that officers must exercise restraint, sound judgment and professionalism, especially during sensitive operations involving members of the public.
According to the Command, while police officers have a statutory duty to prevent crime, maintain public order and effect lawful arrests, such responsibilities must be carried out within the framework of the law and established operational guidelines.
CP Nnanna has also directed that the welfare and medical condition of the injured victim continue to receive appropriate attention, while efforts are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident objectively.
The Commissioner assured residents that the outcome of the review will guide any necessary administrative or operational action.
He further stated that officers who act lawfully and professionally in the discharge of their duties will continue to receive the support and protection of the Command.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents, their lawful means of livelihood, government facilities, critical infrastructure and other sensitive public assets, while insisting that such operations must be conducted using lawful and proportionate measures.
The police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the review process to run its course, assuring that facts established during the investigation will determine the appropriate next steps.
