I wouldn’t convert my car to CNG,’ TV host shares experience
Nigerian TV host and producer Bolanle Olukanni has expressed reservations about converting petrol-powered cars to compressed natural gas (CNG), despite acknowledging its potential as an alternative fuel.
It was reported that Olukanni shared her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, recounting her recent visit to India, where she observed widespread use of CNG in taxis. “I was in India last week. This is my second time this year. Most of the taxis use CNG,” she wrote.
She noted the efficiency of CNG and commended the smooth ride during her three-hour journey from Delhi to Agra.
However, Bolanle Olukanni criticized the Nigerian government’s campaign to promote CNG as chaotic and poorly executed. “The way this CNG campaign has been handled is just chaotic and could have been done in a much better way. Nigerians are already angry and upset. The lack of information about how CNG works created a massive vacuum for a lot of hysteria,” she stated.
She further argued that many Nigerians would be reluctant to convert their vehicles due to distrust and financial concerns. “We all know in Nigeria people don’t trust and aren’t going to go and sacrifice their hard-earned petrol cars to be converted to CNG,” she added.
Despite describing CNG as a viable solution to petrol challenges, Olukanni admitted, “At the end of the day, I know I wouldn’t convert my car to CNG. Just wouldn’t happen.”
Her remarks come amid rising skepticism in Nigeria over the feasibility of CNG adoption. Earlier in the week, prominent figures including music icon 2Face Idibia, social media influencer Ola of Lagos, and comedian Basket Mouth embarked on a fact-finding mission to India to assess CNG’s potential for Nigeria.
