Human Right, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation (HURIDE), has condemned the Anambra State Government for wasting huge sums of money to disinfect markets in the State.

In a statement made available to newsmen yesterday in Awka , the State capital, HURIDE described as monumental waste of scarce resources the disinfecting of all 63 markets in the State by the State Government.

In the statement signed by the chairman of Board of Trustees, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, the group querried “how can you embark on disinfecting markets which have no human activities now instead of residential houses in Fegge, Odoakpu,Okpoko,Awada,Nkpor,Omagba I/II,33 and other areas in the major cities of the State which have several millions of population without drainage channels.

” In Obodo-Ukwu road, the Sakamori there has totally been blocked just as that of PortHacourt Road, Ziks Avenue, and all the drainage system in Okpoko have been equally blocked.

These areas have potentials not only for Coronavirus Pandemic but air borne diseases due to dirty environment” the group said.

They called on the Governor to immediately stop this ongoing fumigation of the markets in the State
“The Governor should stop this ongoing charade called fumigation of Anambra Markets and start disinfecting residential homes since markets were currently shut down.

Resdential homes are more important than markets now and the most prone areas for any disease are Fegge, Okpoko, Iyiowa Odekpe, Odoakpu, Awada, Omagba phase 1 and 11, and other areas in and around Onitsha environs” they demanded.

HURIDE said these are the most densely populated areas which ooze out stenchy odour due to dirty drainages, lamenting that the dirty environment was capable of causing diseases worse than Coronavirus in the State.

HURIDE said the Governor should at all time pursue policies and programmes that are geared towards the interest of the public instead engaging in projects that have no direct bearing on the people, saying they rather created opportunity for the Governor’s cronies to use this Covid-19 period to make money at the instance of the people.
