How many of you still remember and or understand this plant attached, in Igbo we call it Abosi/Abusi/Aboshi [depending on dialect](Camwood – Baphia nitida) beyond its surface use?
In many places today, once the tree grows big, people begin to demonize, avoid it, cut it down, or associate it with things that have nothing to do with its biological and medicinal value.
That is one of the reasons mature trees are becoming scarce. What we are losing is not just a tree, but a pharmacologically active system that our ancestors used with precision.
From a phytochemical standpoint, Baphia nitida is rich in:
- Flavonoids – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, vascular protective
- Tannins – astringent, antimicrobial, wound-healing
- Saponins – membrane-active compounds with antimicrobial and immune-modulating roles
- Alkaloids – bioactive regulators affecting microbial and cellular processes
- Terpenoids – anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial
- Pterocarpans and pigments (santalins A & B, santarubins) – responsible for its red color and part of its biological activity
These compounds are not passive. They interact with inflammation pathways, microbial membranes, oxidative stress systems, and tissue repair mechanisms.
In simple terms its pharmacological relevance properly.
- Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect: Leaf and heartwood extracts reduce inflammation through modulation of inflammatory mediators. By that, I mean that bioactive compounds present in the leaves and the inner wood (heartwood) of Baphia nitida interact with the body’s inflammatory pathways.
The leaves and the inner red heartwood of Baphia nitida contain active phytochemicals such as flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, and pterocarpans.
The above compounds are released when the plant is properly prepared, either by boiling the leaves in water to form a decoction or by drying and grinding the heartwood into powder, sometimes mixed with oil for topical use.
Inflammation in the body is driven by chemical mediators such as prostaglandins, cytokines like TNF-alpha and interleukin-6, and enzymes such as cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX).
The phytochemicals in camwood interact with these pathways.
Flavonoids act as antioxidants and help reduce oxidative stress that sustains inflammation, while also downregulating inflammatory signaling.
Terpenoids can inhibit the activity of enzymes like COX, which are responsible for producing inflammatory mediators.
Tannins contribute by tightening tissues and reducing fluid leakage into inflamed areas, thereby reducing swelling.
The practical outcome of these interactions is that swelling, pain, and tissue irritation are reduced when the plant is used appropriately.
This is why it has been traditionally applied in conditions such as joint pain, sprains, rheumatic inflammation, skin irritation, and wound care.
It is important to understand that this does not mean it functions exactly like pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory drugs in terms of precision or speed, but it does mean that it has measurable biological activity that can modulate inflammatory processes when used correctly. It might not be quick but that’s going to give you a desired result.
Application:
Powder (heartwood) mixed with shea butter or palm kernel oil
Apply to affected joints 1–2 times daily
- Antimicrobial and antifungal activity: Camwood shows activity against organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Bacillus cereus. It also works against fungal infections.
Application:
Powder + clean water or oil to form paste
Apply to affected skin areas for 20–30 minutes
Root preparations are used traditionally for fungal infections like ringworm.
- Dermatological and skin repair function
The tannins and flavonoids support skin barrier repair, reduce oxidative stress, and control microbial growth.
Use cases:
Acne
Eczema
Minor burns
Skin irritation
Application:
Mix powder with carrier oil like coconut oil or baby oil
Apply 2–3 times weekly, not excessive to avoid dryness
- Gastrointestinal activity
Leaf infusion has astringent and antimicrobial effects useful in diarrhea and enteric irritation.
Dosage (traditional mild use):
Small handful of leaves boiled in 250 ml water
Take in small amounts once or twice daily
Not for prolonged use.
- Wound healing and haemostatic function
Tannins promote protein precipitation and tissue tightening, aiding wound closure and reducing bleeding.
Application:
Clean powder lightly applied to minor wounds
Or mixed with oil for dressing
- Broader traditional internal uses (require caution)
There are uses for:
Jaundice
Diabetes
Respiratory conditions
Certain infections
These involve decoctions and combinations and should not be done casually.
Now let us address extraction, because many people get this wrong.
Different parts of the plant require different extraction methods:
- Aqueous extraction (water-based)
Used for leaves
Suitable for flavonoids, tannins, and water-soluble compounds
Done as infusion or decoction
- Lipid extraction (oil-based)
Used for heartwood powder
Mix with shea butter, palm kernel oil, or coconut oil
Enhances skin absorption of lipid-soluble compounds
- Mechanical extraction (powder form)
Dry heartwood properly
Grind into fine powder
This is the most common traditional form
Alcohol extraction is possible scientifically but not common in traditional settings.
Storage is critical if you want potency.

Avoid moisture to prevent microbial growth
Avoid plastic for long-term storage

Now toxicological and safety considerations.

Tannins and alkaloids can irritate the gut and stress metabolic systems if abused. - Avoid long-term internal use
Short-term therapeutic use is different from continuous consumption. - Skin sensitivity
Some individuals may react; test before full application. - Pregnancy and chronic illness
Internal use should be avoided without proper guidance due to limited clinical data. - Source matters
Plants harvested from contaminated environments may contain heavy metals or toxins.
Now step back and look at the bigger issue.
A plant with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, dermatological, and metabolic properties is gradually disappearing, not because it lacks value, but because it is misunderstood and poorly managed.
Abosi/Abusi/Aboshi is not just a cultural plant. It is a pharmacologically active species with real biochemical relevance.
The problem is not the absence of medicine.
The problem is the absence of structured knowledge, proper use, and conservation.
