Hoodlums Attack Covid-19 Task Force Team

Suspected hoodlums terriorizing various Communities including Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday allegedly attacked officials of Covid-19 Taskforce in the area.

It was gathered that the hoodlums settled in Otor -Ihwreko Community where they were fully mobilized for the alleged attack on the Covid-19 Pandemic disease Officials and tore their clothes including leaving them with degree of injuries

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘A’ Division Ughelli, CSP Kelvin Zuokumor who confirmed the attack on the COVID-19 officials, said that he immediately mobilized a team of Policemen to the scene where six of them were arrested and are currently being detained.

It was further gathered that the hoodlums allegedly emerged from the Otor -Ihwreko Community shrine with dangerous weapons and unleashed their terrors on the officials who were later rescued.
They were said to have disguised in NULGE bus which allegedly conveyed them to the scene where they descended on two female Policewomen sergeants and beat them to stupur after their uniforms were tore to shred while their war songs lasted.

The angry hoodlums vowed that they will no longer fold their hands and watch the state government kill their people with hunger under the guise of Covid-19 Pandemic disease as it imposes stringent conditions on their people, especially with hunger that would further be resisted in possible bloodbath.

A market woman who spoke to our Correspondent, Mrs Helen Ikeh said that the Covid-19 officials had insisted that anyone caught without face masks in the area would not only be sanctioned but be quarantined and s test for Covid-19 Pandemic disease conducted for he or she, adding that it was on this note that the angry hoodlums described the sensitization statement as plot to rubbish the people thereby descending on the officials to stop their move of executing their warnings on failure.

While condemning the attack on the officials, Ughelli North Local Government Council Chairman, Godwin Adode however vowed that the Perpetrators would not go unpunished adding that they will face the wrath of the law especially the arrested ones.

Meanwhile, there was tension in the early hours of Tuesday in Umunede Community along Asaba Benin expressway when members of the Umunede Community Vigilante group protested the alleged extortion of money from its residents by the police during nighfall.

The protesters barricaded the expressway in several hours demanding the removal of the Policemen from the Community including war songs” we don’t want any police man in Umunede Community again, they are extorting money from residents during nighfall and they are not working, they must go out of our community”.

Leader of the vigilante group, Mr Ifeanyi Michael said” policemen are extorting money from our people, especially during nighfall, we don’t want them again, everyone is afraid when it is nighfall, the police will be demanding for N200,00 sometimes, asking for N500,00 for no reasons adduced, we are tied of the nonsense and we want them out of our community”.

But in a swift reaction, the Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Muhammed Inuwah however assured the angry protesters of looking into the matter and urged them to reduce their grouses against the police into writing to enable him follow it up officially and warned that the police will not accept any break down of law and order in the state as anyone found would be severely punished.
