Governors Still Control N4.5tn LG Funds Despite Supreme Court Ruling
One year after the Supreme Court mandated direct federal allocations to Nigeria’s 774 local governments, state governors have retained control of ₦4.5 trillion, defying the ruling.
Despite CBN directives, most LGs have yet to open individual accounts. Labour unions and Senior Advocates of Nigeria blame both state and federal governments for stalling implementation.
While Adamawa claims full compliance, many states, including Benue and Kano, continue to use joint accounts, limiting LG autonomy. Legal experts have condemned the situation as a breach of constitutional order.
