Godfrey Okoye University becomes best private academy in Southeast, South-South

Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has ranked Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu as the best private university in the Southeast and South-South geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

It also ranked the university as the 5th best private university and 45th among the federal, state and privately owned universities in Nigeria.

Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, the largest public research body in Spain.

Criteria used in the rankings were: Impact, Openness and Excellence of each university.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Christian Anieke, said in a statement issued on Sunday in Enugu that the ranking represented hard work, excellence, and new way of doing things.

He attributed the success to commitment to duty by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university.

The Webomatrics reports, he stated, indicated that GO-UNI, was also among the best universities in the world, securing the 5,270th position.

The vice-chancellor said that it was compulsory for all lecturers of the university to be on Google Scholar as well as publish articles regularly in international journals.

The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) reports that GO-UNI, the first diocesan university in Nigeria was established in 2009 with its main campus at Ugwuomu Nike, Enugu State and two campuses at Thinkers Corner, Enugu.

GO-UNI began academic activities with two faculties, but now has five faculties – Management and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies, Law, Education and Arts, a College of Medicine and a School of Post-Graduate Studies.

The university also has the first DNA Centre in Africa; a College of Practical Skills and a European Business Park that accommodates more than 50 European companies.

It has the best Law Auditorium in Nigeria, a 2,000-seat capacity auditorium at the Ugwuomu main campus. (NAN)
