A former German police officer admitted in court on Wednesday said that he had delivered the Hitler salute in a beer garden.

“My client cannot explain the reasons behind his misconduct,’’ said his lawyer. “He deeply regrets it.’’

The Hitler salute and the display of Nazi symbols such as the swastika were illegal in Germany.

In addition, the man admitted through his lawyer to sending photos by mobile phone in 2017 of a handcuffed prisoner dressed only in underwear and making an insulting comment referring to his dark skin colour.

The officer resigned in summer 2021 after the investigation against him began.

The accusations had come to light during the course of investigations into a wider drugs scandal that shook the Munich police force in 2020.
