Fire Ravages Onitsha Plumbing Market, Millions in Losses

A devastating fire outbreak has struck the plumbing section of Bridgehead market in Onitsha, leaving traders in ruins. The inferno, which started around 10pm on Friday, has caused damages estimated at billions of Naira.
The Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon Chief Emeka Orji, has commiserated with the victims, describing the disaster as “pathetic”. He promptly mobilized fire service officials, who managed to contain the blaze.
Traders have praised the mayor’s swift response, saying it prevented further destruction. “The fire would have escalated if not for the quick action,” said Chief Chikodi Ejiofor, chairman of the plumbing section.
The fire, which was still smoldering hours after it started, has damaged goods worth an estimated N2-3 billion Naira, One trader alone lost around N4 million. The cause of the fire is unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
The mayor has directed fire service officials to ensure the fire is completely extinguished, as there’s a risk of it reigniting. The incident has left the community shaken, with traders struggling to come to terms with their losses.
As at the time of filling the report, Chief Ejiofor was still at the site with the fire service officials to ensure no further excalation.
