FG Plans Revival of Baro Port with Dredging, Road and Rail Links
The Federal Government has pledged to revive the dormant Baro River Port in Niger State through dredging of the River Niger, road and rail connectivity, and private sector participation.
Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola told the House Ad-Hoc Committee that poor transport links and limited funding have stalled the port since its 2019 commissioning. NIWA plans to dredge 2,000km of inland waterways, while the Transport Ministry is developing a rail line to connect the port.
Officials say the project will boost trade under AfCFTA, ease highway congestion, and link agricultural value chains. Lawmakers will inspect the port on Saturday as part of efforts to fast-track operations.
