FG Gives Relief To Over Thousand People Affected By Flooding In Awba-Ofemili

Over one thousand persons displaced during last year’s flood disaster from Awba-Ofemili in Awka North Local Government Area have received succor from the federal government through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI.

relief materials given to the people by the federal agency were one hundred and twenty-two twenty-five-kilogram bags of rice, one hundred and twenty-two cartons of noodles, one hundred and twenty-two bags of Semo, twenty-one cartons of four-point-five litres of canned groundnut oil, seven bags of sachet salt, and twenty cartons of seasoning.

Handing over the items to people of Awba-Ofemili, the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Hajia Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim represented by Principal Administration Officer in the agency, Mrs Gloria Ene, explained that the relief materials were to cushion the effects of last year’s flood disaster on the people.

She asked the community leaders to ensure equitable distribution of the items, and warned the people against selling them.

A Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Security Matters, Chief Ignatius Okafor, thanked the federal government for remembering Awba-Ofemili people, lamenting that the flood really dealt with people in the community.

He said that though it has been long the flood receded, people of Awba-Ofemili still need help from the government and good spirited individuals as the effects of the disaster is still much on them.

According to him, they now buy everything from the market, and have no seedlings and financial capacity to cultivate this farming season.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Miss Ebele Okafor from Akpana village Awba-Ofemili and her Umuchibu village counterpart, Mr David Anaeke both disabled, while appreciating the federal government for the kind gesture, narrated their ugly experiences during the flood outbreak last year.

For the Parish Priest of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church Awba-Ofemili, Reverend Father Joseph Nwilo, people in the area really need help in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, and access to potable water and commended the administration of Professor Chukwuma Soludo for remembering the area in road infrastructure, noting that the road on completion will reduce the sufferings of the people.
