FG Emphasizes SDG Integration in Development Plans

The Federal Government has called for the full integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into national and sub-national development plans to ensure effective implementation.
Speaking at the North-East Regional Consultation in Gombe, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, stressed the need for accelerated progress. Represented by Dr. Bala Yunusa, she highlighted that Nigeria is conducting its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) for the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, engaging stakeholders to assess progress and challenges.
Citing the 2024 UN SDG Report, she noted that only 17% of targets are on track, with nearly 50% making minimal progress and over one-third regressing. She attributed Nigeria’s slow pace to financial constraints, the COVID-19 pandemic, and insecurity.
Orelope-Adefulire emphasized the need for robust monitoring and evaluation systems and called for stronger collaboration between the government, private sector, UN agencies, donors, and civil society. She also reaffirmed global commitments to bold actions, investments, and partnerships for SDG acceleration.
The North-East Regional Consultation, attended by 150 participants, focused on institutional frameworks, SDG progress, and challenges. Gombe State SDGs Focal Person, Engr. Sulaiman Turaki, described it as a crucial platform to shape Nigeria’s 2025 VNR, urging stakeholders to drive impactful solutions for sustainable development.
