Enugu state govt douses tension in Amechi Uwani Community leadership tussle.

Except for the timely intervention of Enugu state government, the tussle for new executive members to manage the affairs of Amechi Uwani Community in Enugu South local government area of Enugu state would have gone sour, with sad stories emanating from the village.

The Community in the past one month was enmeshed in crisis over attempt to rubbish current leadership of the town union led by Deacon Okey Ogbodo as it’s President General,over allegations that the  executives have overstayed their tenure. The scheduled meeting of the union fixed for Saturday,June 6, at the above secretariat was brutally marred by hired thugs, who doesn’t want the Deacon Okey Ogbodo elected executive to continue piloting the affairs of the town union,over allegations that their tenure has expired.

The plot against Deacon Okey Ogbodo led Amechi Uwani town union’s leadership was allegedly masterminded by some politicians from the community for their pecuniary political interest,who claimed  to have acted on instructions of a former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani,who is a native of Amechi Uwani community.

But in his monitored reaction on the allegation, Chief Ken Nnamani while he spoke to an online publication  on telephone from Abuja,distanced himself from the ugly incident which aborted the Saturday,June 6 town union  meeting in his village.  The former Senate President,said it will be unimaginable for him to be in Abuja since the COVID 19 pandemic erupted and dictate what happens in his rural community.

Deacon Ogbodo in a chat with ‘THE AUTHORITY South East post lamented that the lock-down brought about by COVID-19 pandemic could not permit the usual quarterly meeting of the Union to hold since after the last annual general meeting held on December 28,2019. However, to ensure that his administration kept  to the constitutional  conduct of a fresh election,after four years, He called for a general meeting with a focus on setting agenda for a fresh election,while observing all COVID -19 safety rules.

He explained that the Union’s constitution stipulates that the processes of a fresh election and members of the electoral committee should be constituted by the outgoing executive and not any outside body or by any individual no matter how highly placed in the society  He disclosed further that the Amechi Uwani constitution also makes provision for any member of the executive  to run for a second term in office,if he so wish. To that effect, he is qualified to run for a second term. He mentioned that Senator Ken Nnamani whom his detractors alleged to have acted his scripts was also a benefactor of the same provisions in the Unions constitution, having served two terms as the town Unions President General, and an additional two years before he relinquished the position after winning  his senatorial  election.

THE AUTHORITY gathered that in as much as  Deacon Ogbodo vowed to conduct fresh election in accordance with provisions in  Amechi Uwani  constitution on last Saturday.June 20, his detractors had also planned to install a parallel executive of the town union. But eventually, ‘ A Daniel Come to Judgement’ as state government through Ministry of Rural development, at the weekend ordered for the suspension of all elections in Amechi Uwani community leadership tussle till further notice. The state government further said in order not to have a vacuum in running the affairs of the community, the status quo in the town unions leadership should be maintained.

A copy of the state government letter ordering for maintenance of status quo addressed President General Amechi Uwani and copied to Traditional ruler of the community equally,  which was signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary,Ministry of Rural development by one Mr Ezeilo Godwin read in parts,

May I refer to your letter dated June 10,on the notification and approval request for the conduct of Amechi Uwani Community Development Union election scheduled for  June 20, at Community primary school Eke Otu. I am directed to inform you that the said election should be put on hold till further notice’

‘The reason for the postponement is because of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic in the country and directives of the state government on safety regulations,coupled with the petition from Traditional ruler,Amechi Uwani community’.

‘Hon Commissioner also directed that the status quo of the town union executives remains in order not to create a vacuum in the leadership of the  Community town union and also to enable the ministry schedule a meeting for all parties at the appropriate time’.
