Enugu Disco Addresses Mainpower Takeover Concerns

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has clarified its status amid rumors that it has ceased operations following the licensing of its subsidiary, Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC). Earlier this week, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) officially transferred regulatory authority to the EERC, allowing Mainpower to assume electricity distribution operations in Enugu State under an interim operating license. This transition has sparked confusion and misconceptions among the public. In response to media inquiries on Friday, EEDC spokesperson Emeka Ezeh confirmed that the company is still operational. He emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns raised by customers, vendors, service providers, and other stakeholders. When asked about EEDC’s status, Ezeh stated, “EEDC remains a holding company for Mainpower and continues to conduct electricity distribution in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo States. We urge electricity customers in Enugu State, served by Mainpower, to stay calm as we are committed to providing efficient and accountable electricity service delivery.” He further noted that with the approval of the Electricity Act 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, states can now generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their territories. Consequently, the NERC no longer holds regulatory authority; this responsibility now rests with the EERC. Additionally, the Enugu State Government is establishing its own regulatory framework to oversee the electricity market and issue operating licenses to potential investors, in accordance with the Electricity Act 2023.
