ECOWAS has declared a regional state of emergency, warning of escalating coups, political instability, and rising terrorist threats.

Commission President Omar Touray said West Africa now faces “high-risk” conditions, citing recent coups in Guinea-Bissau, an attempted coup in Benin, stalled transitions, and growing insecurity.

He urged member states to intensify security cooperation and protect democratic governance amid worsening humanitarian crises.
