Easter: Clerics Exhorts Christians To Shun Sin, Focus On Salvation

Shouts of Hallelujah rented the air in different churches yesterday as Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ known as Easter.

The celebratory mood of the mass and services in the churches shows an end to the mourning and penitentiary season of Lent, passion and death of Jesus Christ as his resurrection assures the faithful victory over death and power of Satan.

The mood of the celebration were also reflected in the Churches’ liturgical colours where they have changed from red, black and violet to white.

In a sermon at the Easter Service at St Jude’s Anglican Church, Adazi-Ani, the Vicar of the church and Archdeacon of Adazi-Ani Archdeaconry, Venerable Chris Nkem-Okafor, explained that Easter is a great day in Christendom as Christ’s resurrection shows his defeat over sin and death and that the mortality of the human flesh will not stop the children of God from receiving the immortality of rising on the last day.

Venerable Nkem-Okafor explained that the resurrection of Jesus Christ gives hope and redemption to any human who accepts and believes in the power of the resurrection.

A Priest at St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, Reverend Father Anthony Nwokeọcha, in a homily said that it is a moment of great joy for the Church as Christ defeated death and rose again which is the basis of Christian faith.

Father Nwokeocha stated that those who journeyed with Jesus Christ through the Lenten season have gained life for he has paid a huge price and reconciled them with their maker, even as he challenged the faithful not to go back to their old selves but to remain focused and steadfast in their Salvation and always remember that Christ died to liberate them from the sins of slavery and shackles of the devil.

The Archdeacon, Nawfia Archdeaconry and Vicar, Saint Michaels and All Angels’ Anglican Church, Nawfia, Venerable Ifeanyi Umeh whose sermon centered on the topic: “Overcoming sin and death”, maintained that Jesus Christ has defeated death and washed away all their sins and gives them hope of new beginnings.

Venerable Umeh reminded the parishioners that they are also commissioned to go all over the world and proclaim the risen Jesus Christ.

For the Vicar In-charge of Christ Holy Church International, Number One, Agulu, Reverend Pastor Patrick Chigbata, Christians should use the occasion of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to seek God’s intervention upon their lives and the nation.

Special renditions by the choir, prayers and thanksgiving climaxed the services and mass covered.
