Driving Unregistered Vehicles on Nigerian Roads is Illegal – Force PRO Warns

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has emphasized that driving an unregistered vehicle on Nigerian roads or highways constitutes a criminal offense punishable by law. Adejobi made this known via X (formerly Twitter) in response to a user, @hookahsmokerNevertheless, who alleged that police officers in Ogun State extorted ₦200,000 from him at a police station. The user explained that he had purchased a Lexus 350 on December 31, 2024, but had yet to register it. He claimed he was stopped by officers last week, who then illegally extorted the money from him inside the station without the knowledge of their commander. Adejobi criticized the user for failing to report the matter to the station commander before making the payment and reminded the public of the legal obligation to register vehicles. “Driving an unregistered car on any of our roads is an offense,” Adejobi reiterated, noting that while addressing the issue of unregistered vehicles was legitimate, the alleged extortion was unprofessional. He assured that the incident would be reviewed and advised the user to contact the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer for further action. Adejobi concluded by urging Nigerians to follow due process and combat illegality.
