DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND THE POLITICS OF PHILANTHROPY |

INVITATION TO BOQER SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT’S MASTERCLASS 7.0

Philanthropy has now become a major currency for acquisition of votes and political support, especially in developing countries. With this, the subsistence need of voters are grotesquely manipulated by deep pockets, who often pose as philanthropists.

Due to the manifest vulnerabilities of such systems, genuine individuals find it difficult to have a shot at public office, as the question of “what has he done for the people?” becomes the primary consideration. By this they ignore the person’s other credentials just so they can train their focus on how many bags of rice, medical care, scholarships or other such “philanthropic” gestures the person has parted with, in the pursuit of his political aspirations.

It becomes even more dicey for devout Christians. They practise a faith which instructs them not to publicise their alms-giving, while playing in a political system which demands them to “prove” their “love” for the people.

There was a lot of “love” in the air this Christmas. In that same spirit, Boqer School of Government continues by 9:00 pm (WAT) this evening to dissect the topic: Developing Countries and the Politics of Philanthropy.
