Court Orders Final Forfeiture of N150 Million Linked to Rep Member Nicholas Mutu
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of N150 million linked to Hon. Nicholas Mutu, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the forfeiture order following an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which maintained that the money represented proceeds of unlawful activities. The court held that the commission had established its case after considering objections raised by Mutu and his company, Airworld Technologies Limited.
The court consequently directed that the N150 million be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The EFCC alleged that the funds were part of kickbacks received while Mutu served as Chairman of the House Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission between 2014 and 2016.
The judgment comes months after another Federal High Court discharged and acquitted Mutu of money laundering charges arising from the same investigation. The EFCC has since appealed that decision.
