The Federal High Court in Akure has ruled that Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa cannot contest the 2028 governorship election, citing the constitutional eight-year tenure limit.

Justice Toyin Bolaji Adegoke held that his two swearing-ins—first to complete the late Rotimi Akeredolu’s term and then after winning the 2024 election—count toward the limit.

The court dismissed objections by Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, and the APC, affirming the suit’s validity and upholding the Constitution.
