COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE CONGRESS OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ), ANAMBRA STATE COUNCIL, HELD ON THURSDAY, JULY 2nd, 2026 AT THE GODWIN EZEEMO INTERNATIONAL PRESS CENTER, NUJ SECRETARIAT COMPLEX AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE.

The Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council held on Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, at the Goodwin Ezeemo International Press Center, NUJ Secretariat complex Awka, under the Chairmanship of the State Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, JP, deliberated on issues affecting the Union and the state and resolved as follows:

1. The Congress expressed concern over the poor quality of some roads that are recently constructed by the State Government, which are already undergoing patches and some being washed away, in contrast to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Promise that all the roads to be Constructed by His Administration will last at least for a period of 20 years.
2. Congress also expressed concern over the non payment of Pension and Gratuity of Staff of the defunct National Light Newspaper and Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), and urged Governor Soludo to address their plight.
3. Congress urged Ndi Anambra to Desist from dumping waste inside the drainage, especially during the rainy season to avoid exacerbating the ecological challenges bedevilling the State, as well as to prevent spread of waterborne diseases like cholera.
4. Congress also enjoined Anambra State residents to participate in environmental sanitation always and support the Anambra State Ministry of Environment in creating a livable environment, urging Anambrarians and residents alike to sustain the practice of environmental cleanliness at their various homes or work places on daily basis.
5. Congress welcomed the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Value Re-Orientation, Dr. Law Mefor, who reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of the Union and shared the Ministry’s readiness as advocated earlier by the NUJ leadership to embark in quarterly Press Briefing on the activities of the State Government.
6. The Congress Thanked The Guest Speaker of the Congress, Mrs Silvia Ngige, who addressed members on the need to be hardworking and consistent in reporting to earn a place of honour in the journalism profession.
7. The Congress also received Mrs Chiamaka Agbili, the Divisional Cooperative Officer of Awka South, who educated members on the best ways to achieve a viable cooperative arm of the Union, that will be beneficial to members of NUJ now and in future.
8. The Congress approved the 2026 NUJ Man of the Year Awards, scheduled for 10th of September, 2026 and called for Goodwill Messages and articles from members and well meaning Nigerians, who want to identify with the Union on this auspicious annual event. The event also aims at celebrating NUJ Anambra State Council at 35. The same day will be the grand finale of the 2026 Press week and Man of the year Awards ceremony of the NUJ Anambra State Council.
9. Congress commended the leadership of the NUJ Anambra State Council led by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD JP, for the efforts in ensuring that the NUJ Secretariat is fenced and for hosting NUJ website, which is up and running.
10. NUJ frowns at motorists driving against traffic ( One way) and appeals to road users to stop driving against traffic sequels to its dangers to public safety.
11. The union however frowned at lack of consideration to turns at some strategic public locations like at St Paul’s Nibo Nise, Ezi Agnes junction Nise, Emeka Aghasili Secondary School, which often forces vehicles heading to those places to drive down to Ngene Awka and return back before entering. NUJ urges ARTMA to liaise with contractors handling the roads to remedy such anomalies across the state where identified. NUJ also urged ARTMA to have a human face even when being resolute and showing no mercy in line with the one people, one state mantra of the state government led by Prof Soludo.
12. NUJ calls on taxpayers to take advantage of the tax waivers by the Anambra State government via AiRS to participate in the Voluntary Assets Income Declaration and Tax Regularization Scheme,(VAIDS) that are ongoing to be in a good standing to avoid being harassed unnecessarily after the expiration of the waiver.
